No deal. Those were the words plastered all over the internet this morning after the Blue Jays and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. failed to reach an agreement on an extension.

We knew this day was coming. Vlad spoke, Ross Atkins spoke, Mark Shapiro spoke. All expressed disappointment with an outcome we saw a mile away.
How could we be so sure that a deal wasn't going to happen? It seems to be more on the shoulders of Vlad than the Blue Jays.
While we don't know what the final offer was to Guerrero, it does appear that the Blue made more than one, quite possibly several. Ross Atkins said that their offer would have broken all the Blue Jays franchise records and made Vladdy one of the richest players in the game.
Mark Shapiro even alluded to the Blue Jays going past their value because of how much they wanted Guerrero there.
When Vlad was asked about the negotiations all he said was, they had their number, I have mine.
It strikes me that Vlad was less flexible than the Blue Jays were in the final days.
And while Guerrero is a smart kid and understands the business of baseball, these kinds of talks are always a two-way street and some compromise is needed by both sides.
Has Vlad overplayed his hand? Is he asking for more than he is worth? Has his figured soared into $600-700M territory? If so, maybe the Blue Jays were wise not to go that high.
First baseman don't get that kind of money.
So, while everyone is justifiably outraged and anger, it is unfair to put the blame squarely on Atkins shoulder, even though he is the fans favourite punching bag.
Vladdy is responsible too. And he might have overplayed his hand.
