The Chicago Cubs have signed Justin Turner to a one year deal, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post.
The Athletic's Patrick Mooney added that it is a major league contract worth roughly $6MM.
Although he is now 40, Turner had publicly expressed his desire to continue his playing career.
While he has played mostly third base throughout his career, Turner also has 143 appearances at second base. He largely split time between first base and DH last year, having only six games at third base between the Blue Jays and Mariners.
The Cubs had been connected to Turner for some time, who many viewed as Plan B for the North Siders. They were also heavily involved in the Alex Bregman sweepstakes and pivoted to the veteran redhead once it became clear that Bregman was going elsewhere.
With Michael Busch at first base, prospect Matt Shaw at third, and Seiya Suzuki getting the majority of DH reps, the Cubs will utilize Turner as a back-up at all three positions.
He also offers insurance in case of injury. If a player like Kyle Tucker or Ian Happ get hurt, Suzuki could shift to the outfield with Turner sliding into the everyday DH role.
Although the Cubs are high on Shaw, he is not guaranteed the starting job, so pairing him with a guy like Turner could help ease him to an everyday role in the majors.
The Cubs infield looks slightly more crowded, as Jon Berti and Vidal Brujan are also on the roster, but Turner adds a veteran presence to go along with the crop of youngsters.
