Toronto Blue Jays President Mark Shapiro and General Manager Ross Atkins talk about the Vladimir Guerrero Jr negotiations with the media at 2025 Spring Training in Dunedin FLA.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr deadline day is here and Blue Jays' President and General Manager have a lot of questions to answer.
However will the answers sound like seasoned baseball executives or slippery politicians?
Sportsnets' Shi Davidi asking all the right questions in Dunedin today:
Mark Shapiro said:
"It's easier to build a championship team with Guerrero, "but we still have to stay disciplined to a number and to our process. In this case, we were emotional. We did value the player deeply and even went past our value because ... we wanted to have him here."
Mark Shapiro on the Blue Jays not extending Guerrero:
"When you go into a negotiation, each side has rationale for a number. In this case, we couldn't align on a common number that shared risk. Both sides take some on and a decision from both parties couldn't be found."

How misaligned were the sides?
"A lot of progress was made over the last few days," aid Shapiro. "But when it comes to getting a deal done, it's either done or not done. And I'm not comfortable talking about details of a negotiation. Never would be."

Ross Atkins on not managing to extend Guerrero:
"Obviously very disappointed. We worked very hard. The motivation is still there. Confident that every thought, idea we had, every dollar that we had was communicated. But we're obviously disappointed to not have gotten that done."
Did you feel that you were close?
"It just depends on how you define close, that's too big of a word to talk specifically about," replied Atkins. "I'm not comfortable talking about numbers."

Was the gap bridgeable, or was there no pathway to a deal?
"I'm confident that we exhausted the communication, the ideas, the thoughts and communicated every dollar and felt that Barry and Vlad got to the point that they were comfortable as well. It just wasn't close enough."
Guerrero said he told Blue Jays about extension deadline at end of last season:
"I don't want my teammates to go through any distractions about that. I'm here today. I'm ready and want to win a lot of games and make it to the playoffs. That's all that's in my head right now."
