In the interview he mentions how the Blue Jays should have never let it get to this point and how they should have focused on Guerrero before Soto, not after.
All of this he says, and it's easy to see why Vladdy wants to test the free agent waters. Wouldn't you?
Ricciardi, who soured himself to Blue Jays fans - and subsequently ownership - for lying about BJ Ryan's injury and randomly starting a feud with Adam Dunn, is not somebody I find myself ordinarily agreeing with. However, he does have a point.
The front office has handled the situation poorly, to say the least. They have had three years to lock up the face of the franchise and have chosen not to do so.
As Ricciardii opines, it comes down to valuation. While Guerrero is valuing himself based off of his season - and what Juan Soto got - the Blue Jays FO were not necessarily banking on him having the year that he did and perhaps were still set on their numbers 2022.
That's a big difference - and a big problem. It's part of the reason why Vlad wants to be a free agent.
Ricciardi also thinks that Vlad will walk. While he won't necessarily have all 29 teams vying for his services, he certainly will have a lot more than he has now.
At the same time, Ricciardi also opines that Vladdy knows he will always have a home in Toronto.
In his hypothetical,Vladdy could test the market, find out what other teams are willing to pay him and then come back to the Blue Jays with that number. While he feels the Blue Jays will pay it, it really depends on how high the number is.
