If the Blue Jays have a winning season in 2025, it might not matter for Ross Atkins.
Bryan Hayes, TSN analyst and insider, has said that because of the Vladimir Guerrero Jr. contract situation, 2025 could be a lose-lose situation for Ross Atkins and the Blue Jays front office.
Part of it comes down to the front office not being as enamoured with Vladdy as much as the fans are.
[Shapiro] really really likes him, really likes, but he doesn't love Vladdy Guerrero Jr. - Bryan Hayes on Mark Shapiro
It could ugly too. Although Vlad wants to be a Blue Jay, he also wants to be wanted, and, as Hayes states, unless ownership gets directly involved, Vladdy, and subsequently Bo, are walking.
Whereas Mark Shapiro still has the confidence of the front office, the same cannot be said for Ross Atkins. As Hayes notes, at some point, they will have to take into consideration where the fans are at, which is overwhelmingly negative towards the Blue Jays GM.
And that's why the front office is in a lose-lose situation when it comes to this season.
If Atkins is fighting for his job, then he needs Vladdy to be good. However, if that happens and the Blue Jays win and Vladdy walks, there's no way the front office can justify that to the fans.
On the other hand if Vladdy plays poorly, it might vindicate the front office and their evaluation, but then the Blue Jays aren't winning. That could also be the last straw for many BBlue Jays fans.
I'm not convinced both of them are going to be gone, I do think if it goes south this year, you couldn't possibly sell me or anyone else on the idea that they'll stick around.
