Vladimir Guerrero Jr to sign $450 million extension by Spring Training deadline according to MLB insider.
According to Spanish MLB insider and former MLB All-Star Carlos Baerga, the Toronto Blue Jays will sign Vladimir Guerrero Jr to a $450 - $550 million contract extension by the spring training deadline.
"Anthony Santander's signing with Toronto today assured Vladimir Guerrero Jr. that the team wants to win and don't be surprised that before Spring Training begins he is signing a Contract with the Toronto Blue Jays worth over $450 million to $550 million." Now, you can take the report from Baerga with a grain of salt, however as a former player who spent 14 years in the big leagues Carlos Baerga has a lot of friends in the industry, and often gets the inside track when it comes to Spanish players before anyone else.
Baerga has been working as an MLB insider for a quite while now and has some success predicting these scenarios
Another Spanish MLB insider Hector Gomez doubled down on what Baerga had hinted at.
According former MLB player Carlos Baerga it would not be a surprise that Vladimir Guerrero Jr. will sign a $450-500 million contract extension with the #BlueJays before the spring training begins. The signing of Anthony Santander on Monday can only reinforce the organization's desire to win and would give Guerrero Jr. a power bat to serve as protection in the starting lineup.
It wouldn't be a reach to say that if Ross Atkins gives Guerrero Jr what he wants in terms of money and term before the spring deadline a deal will get done.
Guerrero Jr. indicated that he woudn't talk about a contract beyond the start of spring training, so this report saying that the deal could be done before spring training is in line with his previous comments.
Through his first six MLB seasons, Guerrero Jr has hit .288/.363/.500 in 3540 PA, with the exact same total of 160 homers, and a 137 wRC+ and 17 fWAR.
Guerrero Jr finished sixth in MVP balloting last season. He raked at a .323/.396/.544 clip with 30 homers and 44 doubles.
His numbers weren't too far off what he'd produced when he was runner-up behind Ohtani in MVP voting in 2021.
An extension of Vladimir Guerrero Jr right after the signing of Anthony Santander to a 5-year potentially 6-year deal is a great start to salvaging an otherwise poor offseason for Ross Atkins.
