According to MLB Insider and baseball writer for the New York Post Jon Heyman, the race to sign Pete Alonso is between the Blue Jays and the New York Mets.
Heyman says that while it's still possible he sign elsewhere, these two destinations seem the most likely landing spots for the free agent first baseman.
The Mets were said to be pivoting after Alonso turned down an earlier extension but are still engaged in talks with one of their most popular players. The Mets Plan B involved asking the Blue Jays about Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
Even with Guerrero willing to move to third base, which he claims is his preferred position, the Jays may only look at signing Alonso if it's on a shorter term deal, ie - one or two years.
If the Blue Jays do land the Polar Bear, that would give them a formidable middle of the order with Guerrero, Alonso, and Anthony Santander.
However, there is another factor to consider. After turning down the Mets extension offer, Alonso fired his agent and signed with Scott Boras, a man known for extracting ridiculous contracts for his clients. While the Jays might be willing to overpay to a certain extent, they may not be willing to meet Boras' high demands.
One number that has recently been thrown out there is three years for $70MM, which is roughly $23MM per year. Not a terrible valuation for a guy like Alonso, but the four-time All-Star is coming off one of his worst years offensively.
