As it turns out, Gimenez is one of the best 2nd baseman in the game. MLB.com's list of top 10 second baseman was released yesterday, and the 2022 All-Star finds himself at number nine.
Ketel Marte tops the list, moving up four spots from 2024, while Jose Altuve and former Blue Jay Marcus Semien round out the top three. Gimenez and the Cubs Nico Hoerner were the only other returnees on the list.
While his offensive metrics leave something to be desired, having only hit nine home runs in 2024, Gimenez makes the list largely on the strength of his defence, which has caused him to win three consecutive American League Gold Glove awards. He is considered the premiere defender at the position in all of major league baseball.
Gimenez is the third Blue Jay on a Top 10 list, following Daulton Varsho's inclusion in the rundown of best centre fielders, and Alejandro Kirk being named as one of the games superior catchers.
The Venezuelan's best year came in 2022 when, in addition to winning his first Gold Glove, also hit 17 home runs, hit .297, was elected to his first All-Star game and was a member of the All-MLB Second Team.
For his career, Gimenez has a .261/322/.393 slash line with 49 home runs, 222 RBIs and 99 stolen bases.
