Daulton Varsho could be back sooner than previously thought. The Blue Jays centre fielder has been recovering from offseason shoulder surgery.
Varsho, who was shut down at the end of 2024 with a rotator cuff injury, was initially thought to miss about the first two weeks of the 2025 season.
While that's still a possibility, Blue Jays insider Keegan Matheson has indicated the Varsho is ahead of schedule.
According to Matheson, the biggest issue for any outfielder when coming back a shoulder injury is throwing. Generally when talking about shoulder injuries, the conversation often centres on pitchers; outfielders can be a little harder to predict.
The good news is that Varsho is hitting. He has been taking full batting practice along with the rest of the team and seems to be okay in mechanics.
If Varsho ends up being ready for opening day, it would be a huge boost for the Blue Jays, who boast one of the best defensive teams in the gain. While it would also one less spot for guys like Joey Loperfido and Nathan Lukes, that is a sacrifice the Blue Jays are willing to make.
There are a variety of players who can fill in in CF in Varsho's absence, including Lukes, Loperfido, and even George Springer. But the Blue Jays are a much, much better team with the reigning gold glove winner in his usual spot.
It is still possible that Varsho starts the season on the IL, but it could come down to him missing a week rather than two.
