The San Diego Padres are bringing back outfielder Tim Locastro, signing him to a minor league deal. Locastro himself confirmed the news to Robert Harding of The Auburn Citizen.

Locastro was with the Padres last season but did not appear in a major league game. Originally drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in 2013, he quickly made a name for himself on the basepaths, stealing 30 bases for Double-A Lansing in 2015. Later that year, he was traded to the Dodgers and made his MLB debut with Los Angeles in 2017.
Despite spending parts of seven seasons in the majors, Locastro has accumulated just 531 career at-bats across 616 plate appearances-roughly the equivalent of one full season.
Even with limited playing time, he holds two major league records:
Most stolen bases to start a career without being caught (29).
Most hit-by-pitches in a season with fewer than 300 plate appearances (22).
While his speed is his standout tool, his defensive metrics are mixed, with a +5 Outs Above Average (OAA) but a -5 Defensive Runs Saved (DRS).
The Padres' current outfield mix includes Jackson Merrill in center field and Fernando Tatis Jr. in right. Left field could be a platoon between Jason Heyward and Connor Joe. Additionally, Tirso Ornelas and Brandon Lockridge are on the 40-man roster.
If Locastro makes the big-league roster, he could serve as a valuable bench option, particularly as a late-inning pinch runner. For now, he'll provide minor league depth alongside another former Blue Jays prospect, Forrest Wall, whom the Padres signed in January.
