Spring Training 2025 could be a turning point for Orelvis Martinez.
The infielder and top Blue Jays prospect enters camp with something to prove after being give a second chance following a PED suspension just one game into his major league career last season.
For Martinez, the key will be proving his a capable defensive player.
The Blue Jays have always loved his bat, which has 30+ home run potential, but have been less enthused about his work with the glove.
Part of the reason for this could be moving around the diamond. Although he has played a lot of shortstop in the minors, he looks to be more of second baseman and third baseman in the major leagues.
There was even talk of him taking grounders at first base, but it feels like that is on the back-burner for now.
Manager John Schneider says Martinez knows what to expect.
It's going to be expected of him to bounce between second and third, and he's got to put a lot of work in. It's going to be an interesting camp for him.
Schneider had earlier acknowledged that Martinez and the Blue Jays had abandoned third base last year but now are clearly at moving him back to the position.
With Leo Jimenez and Will Wagner set to open the Blue Jays, Martinez is most certainly destined for Triple-A.
It possible that he stays there all season, or bounces back-and-forth between Buffalo and Toronto. Much of it depends on how well he improves defensively.
If strides are made, expect to see Orelvis in Toronto at some point this season. If the Blue Jays feel that his glove still needs work, then he will most likely stay in the minor leagues.
Either way, it's bound to an important spring for the youngster.
