Daulton Varsho has given Blue Jays fans an update regarding his shoulder injury and recovery process.
Varsho has been at the Player Development Complex in Florida since January 7th. Since the biggest hurdle for him was getting his throwing arm back to strength, he started off by soft tossing a football.
Now four weeks in, he has begun to throw a baseball again.
He has also started to swing the bat again, both in the cage and during batting practice. He states that there have been no issues in that regard.
I'm only throwing at 90 feet right now. It's not about the distance, it's more about the intensity right now.
While the thought is that Varsho will miss approximately the first two weeks of the regular season, returning around April 15th, the Blue Jays are ruling nothing out and there is an outside chance that he could be on the roster come opening day.
He explains his process and how he is trying to maximize intensity over distance.
You're trying to get intensity so that when you do back up, you're not using your bigger muscles, you're using your rotator cuff again... your labrum... to be able to finish, be able to do what I want to do and be able to spin the ball correctly
Varsho mentions his rotator cuff, which is actually a group of muscles, and the specific part of the shoulder that he had surgery on at the end of last season.
Further updates to come as Spring Training progresses.
