It has been a turbulent offseason for Brett de Geus. The the right-hander was recently designated for assignment by the Pittsburgh Pirates to make room on the roster following their signing of Andrew Heaney.
It has been the fourth time since August that de de Geus has been DFA'd.
de Geus started 2024 with the Seattle Mariners, but was cut by them in early August. He was picked up by the Marlins and the Blue Jays in September where he finished out the year.
He was DFA'd by Toronto following their acquisition of Jeff Hoffman and was sent to the Pirates for cash shortly after.
Earlier in his career he was also designated by both the Rangers and Diamondbacks.
Because Arizona's designation was followed by an outright assignment, de Geus has the right to refuse any subsequent assignment and can instead become a free agent.
de Geus wasn't the only former Blue Jays pitcher cut by the Pirates. Pittsburgh also announced that have released Yerry Rodriguez, who had signed a minor league deal with them in November.
Rodriguez pitched four games for the Blue Jays in 2024 and has also spent some time with the Texas Rangers.
Now he'll making an early exit from camp.
Control has been a sticking point for Rodriguez in his brief major league career, as he has an 8.17 ERA in just 30 games, and has also struggled in the minor leagues though he has high strikeout potential.
