Chris Bassitt has a new role to add to his resume: Bat Boy.
After coming in the last place in the clubhouse Fantasy Football League, the veteran pitcher agreed to the terms and conditions and served as the bat boy in the opening contest of Spring Training.
To add to the humiliation, a special jersey was printed for Bassitt, which had his name and record on the back. He went 4-10.
To make matters worse, Saturday was also Bassitt's 36th birthday. That's one way to celebrate.
Bassitt wasn't scheduled to pitch on Saturday so he was able to fulfill his ceremonial and honorary duties.
This has been a tradition in the Blue Jays clubhouse for the last few seasons. Football is very popular amongst the Blue Jays, and fun activities such as Fantasy League are a way for the tight-knit group to have some fun.
In 2024, the Blue Jays had the same conditions for the loser of the tournament. The honour that year went to relief pitcher Tim Mayza, who also finished with a 4-10 record.
The Blue Jays have other clubhouse activities as well. Famously, Alek Manoah was the leader of a Blue Jays chess club back in 2022.
The Blue Jays clubhouse is known as a close-knit, fun-loving group where the veterans get involved in the shenanigans just as much as the rookies. Bassitt is no exception.
Although he was a good luck charm as the Blue Jays won 6-4, Bassitt will just be happy to get back on the mound.
