Two more pitcher have come off the board. Both Nick Pivetta and Cal Quantrillsigned contracts today.
Pivetta joins the Marlins on a four year, $55MM deal, while Quantrill inked a one year deal with the Miami Marlins.
Pivetta's deal is quite heavily back-loaded, something that is becoming increasingly popular in today's day and age. He'll slide into the third or fourth sport in the Padres rotation, depending on what GM AJ Preller decides to do with Dylan Cease.
Quantrill's deal is for a reported $1.5MM with up to another $500K in performance-based bonuses. He could be in play as the Marlin's fifth starter.
The Blue Jays had been directly or indirectly connected to both of this summer.
In the case of Pivetta, the Blue Jays had strong interest in Pivetta back in December and early January, but it seems a formal offer was never paid.
While it wasn't know whether or not the Blue Jays were even interested in Quantrill, who is the son of former Blue Jays reliever Paul Quantrill, there had some postulating over the last couple weeks that Quantrill would be a nice addition to the Blue Jays bullpen.
Both pitchers are Canadian. While it would have been to some countrymen in a Blue Jays jersey, it seems hard to believe that there was any realistic shot at nabbing them.
Currently the only Canadian on the active roster is pitcher Zach Pop, and he may not be on the team much longer.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. was born in Canada and is a Canadian citizen, but considers himself more Dominican.
