Gonzalez is 18, and from Higuey, Dominican Republic.
Unlike other recent minor league deals, Gonzalez's does not come with an invite to Spring Training. Instead, he was assigned to the DSL Blue Jays, in the Dominican Summer League.
He is a big kid, standing at 6'5 at weighing approximately 200 pounds.
His profile on MiLB has him listed on the restricted list.
While a player can be on the restricted at both the major and minor leagues for a variety of reasons, it does mean that the player is not currently getting paid.
The most common reason for a player ending up on the restricted is due to a failed drug test, though it is unknown if that is with Gonzalez.
What is more likely is that Gonzalez is having some Visa problems which prevents him from entering the US. We have seen this before with Caribbean and Latin American players. Gabriel Moreno is a recent example.
However, given that Gonzalez was assigned to the Dominican Summer League and doesn't yet have to leave his home country, it could be any number of issues.
At 18, Gonzalez is several years from Blue Jays camp. Many IFAs never make it to the big leagues
But the Blue Jays clearly think highly enough of Gonzalez to take a chance on the teenager.
Deals like this are often low-cost for a team as well, with the money spent being anywhere from 10K-100K, so it's something that the Blue Jays can afford.
This brings the number IFAs signed by the Blue Jays to 23.
