According to Sportsnet's Ben Nicholson-Smith and Arden Zwelling Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette will most likely take the bulk of leadoff at-bats this season.
Bo Bichette had three singles in three innings, going 3 for 4 with an rbi and a run scored in a 7-4 win over the Boston Red Sox in Dunedin yesterday. show_image_535870_5
John Schneider so far non-committal one way or the other says Nicholson-Smith. Maybe Will Wagner get some shots there, maybe Springer does, or maybe Andres Gimenez, but Bichette has definitely put himself in that conversation for those leadoff reps.
In a recent interview with Nicholson-Smith in Dunedin Bichette said:
Bo Bichette says he's enjoying the challenge of hitting leadoff in some spring games and has told manager John Schneider that he'd be up for doing so in the regular season. Adds that he's fine with "whatever spot" is needed from him.
So far this spring Bo Bichette is batting .381 in Spring Training with a 1.028 OPS.
Also in a recent interview with Keegan Matheson, Bichette stated that he really enjoys hitting leadoff, that it excites him and that he likes setting the tone for the team as the first hitter.
«It does excite me. I've spent some time there and I've always enjoyed my time there. I take it as a challenge to set the tone for the team.»
Whether it be Will Wagner, Andres Gimenez or Bo Bichette it certainly looks like George Springer has worn out his welcome in the leadoff spot after his dismal 2024 season.
Bichette looks to be the leading candidate so far but will most likely get cycled betwenn the 1 and 2 lineup spots, while the aforementioned will get leadoff reps according to matchups.
