The Toronto Blue Jays have just suffered a blow to their infield depth. It was announced that shortstop Josh Kasevichis scheduled to miss multiple weeks.
Blue Jays insider Arden Zwelling reported on X yesterday that the top infield prospect aggravated a stress reaction in his lower back during a game last weekend against the Atlanta Braves.
While Kasevich wasn't expected to make the opening day roster, he is considered a possible shortstop of the future, especially due to uncertainty surrounding Bo Bichette.
While it's not clear now long Kasevich will be sidelined, Zwelling notes that he will he will be out multiple weeks.
A stress reaction is a physical and mental response to a perceived threat or challenge and often involves a tensing and tightening of the muscles, as well as sweating, increased heart rate, and faster heart rate.
Now, the Blue Jaysand Kasevich will take some time to get this injury under control.
Kasevich finished last year with Triple-A Buffalo and performed well. While he only played 47 games with the Bisons, he slashed .325/.382/.433 and had an outside at being called up later in the year.
Michael Stefanic could play there in a pinch, and does have 63 games of experience in the minors, but he profiles more as a 2nd baseman and third baseman for the Blue Jays and has never played short at the major league level.
