The Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Boston Red Sox 7-4 in a Thursday afternoon matchup at TD Ballpark in Dunedin. Toronto now improves to 7-4 on the Grapefruit League season.
Chris Bassitt made his second start of the spring. He wasn't as effective as his first start, giving up two runs and striking out two in 2.1 innings. The biggest issue for him was control. Bassitt walked four, which caused his pitch count to climb to over fifty.
The Blue Jays opened the scoring in the bottom of the first thanks to a Bo Bichette single and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. double.
After The Red Sox tied it in the top half of the second, Ernie Clement and Davis Schneider hit back-to-back home runs to put the Jays up 4-1.
The Blue Jays and Red Sox exchanged RBI singles in the third and Boston added another in the fourth before Toronto added two in the bottom half of the frame thanks to RBI singles from Alejandro Kirk and Schneider.
The Red Sox scored one final time off Zach Pop in the seventh, before Mason Fluharty and Andrew Bash closed the door to seal the win.
Besides Bassitt, Kevin Gowdy looked nice in his two-thirds of an inning to finish off the third. Nick Sandlin allowed one run in the fourth, while Yimi Garcia and Chad Green each had two strikeouts in scoreless appearances.
The Blue Jays also had their defensive moments too.
In the top of the seventh, Red Sox first baseman Nathan Hickey launched a long fly ball to left field towards Alan Roden.
While a run scored on the sacrifice fly, Alan Roden made a spectacular outstretched catch to prevent more runners from crossing home plate.
Myles Straw and Steward Berroa also added to their strong springs with a single a piece.
The Blue Jays continue their Spring Training slate with an evening game against the New York Yankees on Friday. First pitch is at 6:35PM ET.
