Toronto Blue Jays centerfielder Daulton Varsho is working hard to be in Toronto's Opening Day Lineup.

Daulton Varsho underwent rotator cuff surgery in late September, with the expectation that he would likely start the season on the injured list lasting well into April.

That timeline isn't clear now that Spring Training is well underway, Varsho logged his first Grapefruit League action Friday, going 1-for-3 with a homer while acting as the Blue Jays' designated hitter in a 10-7 win over the Tigers.
Varsho was again the the Blue Jays line up on Sunday versus the Philadelphia Phillies and again went yard in his first at bat of the game.
Getting back to regular hitting action is certainly a good sign for Varsho, and Jays manager John Schneider also provided reporters (including MLB.com's Keegan Matheson) with some updates on Varsho's defensive progress.
«There's more boxes to check, like throwing to the bases on back-to-back days,» Schneider said. «This was another good day for him, throwing out to 120 feet, so I think it's more about how he's rebounding from those once he does start throwing to the bases and getting into games. We're trying to take this in three- or four-day buckets. He's progressing well. I don't want to put anything past him or say [Opening Day is] not a definite possibility. It will go right down to the end as long as he doesn't have any setbacks. If he's there, great. If he's not, we know he's going to be soon.»
«You're trying to get intensity so that when you do back up, you're not using the bigger muscles, you're using your rotator cuff again, your labrum, to be able to finish and be able to do what I want to do, spin the ball correctly, instead of pushing it,» Varsho said to Sportsnet's Shi Davidi. «We'll eventually get to where we need to stretch it out.»

Varsho added that he's hoping the rehab will make him a more complete baseball player. In his third season in Toronto, he had a .214 batting average with 98 hits, 18 home runs, 58 RBIs, and 73 runs scored in 136 games.
«This process helped me slow down with my swing, understand my moves a little bit more, understand my mechanics. I took it for granted that I was doing certain things,» Varsho added. «Like understanding how to throw a baseball correctly - you're reteaching yourself how to throw. Hitting in the box, what are the moves I'm doing, so that when I go through funks during a season, I have something to go back to, slow me back down and this is what I need to do, A, B and C, to be able to get through it. The rehab helped me helped me with, it's okay to relax and reset and get back to being grounded and normal.»
