Pitchers and catchers are set to report the Dunedin complex today.
Position players will come five days later on February 18th.
As pitchers and catchers generally need longer to get into game shape, it is standard practice to have them report to camp before everyone else.
Although the
Blue Jays rotation is set, there will be some interesting storylines to follow.
One player pitching coach Pete Walker and bullpen coach Graham Johnson will be keeping close watch on is Yariel Rodriguez.
While Ross Atkins stated earlier that he will enter camp as a starter, many feel this is simply a way for him to be stretched out and that he will inevitably start the season in the bullpen.
Speaking of the bullpen, there are a handful of pitchers vying for the final spot in the bullpen. While some have a leg-up on others, there are plenty of promising young rookies who could surprise as well. One to keep tabs on is left-hander Mason Fluharty.
Beyond pitching, the
Blue Jays have no less than nine catchers in camp. Can Tyler Heineman keep hold of the back-up or will it go to Christian Bethancourt. Phil Clarke and Ali Sanchez are also catchers to pay attention to.
While none of these storylines will get resolved within these first few days, it is bound to be an exciting spring nonetheless.
The first full-squad workout is February 18th, while the first
Spring Training game is February 27th.
