As the only Major League Baseball team in Canada - and one of just two teams under corporate ownership - the Toronto Blue Jays are a valuable commodity. But just how much are they worth?
According to Sportico, a website focused on the business of sports, the Blue Jays rank as the 97th most valuable team across all professional sports.
Sportico's list includes franchises from the NFL, NBA, NHL, and international football (soccer). Among MLB teams, the Blue Jays rank 13th, with an estimated valuation of $2.27 billion and total revenue of $383 million in 2023.
At 97th overall, the Blue Jays are positioned between the NHL's Philadelphia Flyers and fellow MLB club, the Washington Nationals.
It comes as no surprise that the two most valuable MLB teams are the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers, worth $7.93 billion and $6.3 billion, respectively.
The Yankees rank fifth overall, trailing only the NFL's Dallas Cowboys and the NBA's Golden State Warriors, New York Knicks, and Los Angeles Lakers. The Dodgers land at 14th overall, just ahead of the Boston Red Sox, who are valued at $5.69 billion.
Sportico determines team valuations based on three primary metrics:
Total Value: The sum of the franchise's market value combined with the value of team-related businesses and real estate holdings.
Team Value: The market value of the team itself, derived from local and national revenue streams and team-specific multipliers. This excludes any team-related businesses held by the owners.
Team-Related Businesses and Real Estate Holdings: The value of the owner's equity in businesses directly tied to the team - whether listed on the team's balance sheet or held separately - along with government-assessed real estate tied to venues, practice facilities, and adjacent developments.
Every team in Sportico's top 100 list is valued at $2 billion or more.
