Where will Anthony Santander play? Blue Jays have plan in place

While the news may come as unsurprising for some Blue Jays fans, many projections had Santander pencilled as the opening day DH.

While SSantander is not known for his glove, accumulating a -7 DRS last season, it allows the Blue Jays to create more opportunities for Will Wagner, while having another veteran presence in the outfield alongside George Springer in the wake of Daulton Varsho's absence.

So while the Blue Jays might be slightly defensively weaker, they will nonetheless be offensively stronger with both Santander and Wagner in the lineup.

Left field is also not completely foreign to Santander, who has 90 career appearances at the position.

Santander will still have a fair number of days at DH, as well as potentially right field and first base, but left will be his primary position.

This will also allow the Blue Jays to cycle through their centre field options on a platoon, maintaining the health of the younger players and not overusing them.

Once Varsho returns, it will be interesting to see how manager John Schneider will utilize Santander as he will also want to give playing time to guys like Joey Loperfido, Nathan Lukes, and Davis Schneider, depending on how many of them end up making the team.

Santander will probably have slightly better defensive metrics in LF than he has had in right, so that -7 DRS should improve somewhat.

Things can obviously change between now and opening day, but at the Blue Jays have a plan for their marquee free agent signing.
