According to MLB Insider Bob Nightengale, Bregman turned down an alleged six year, $170MM offer from Toronto.
While the six years was in-line with Bregman's desired contract length, the $170MM figure comes with an AAV of $28.3MM.
This is far less than what the Red Sox offered him. Bregman is set to earn $40MM/yr over the next three years while playing for the Boston.
It's not necessarily a loss for the Blue Jays, as many consider Boston's deal a massive overpay for a star on the decline. Nevertheless, it won't do much to quell naysayers whose narrative is that nobody wants to come to Toronto.
Simply put, Bregman signed with the team that offered him the most money. The fact that he is represented by super-agent Scott Boras, makes this even less surprising.
Bregman also has good career numbers at Fenway Park, though it is unknown how much that was a factor in his decision.
Bregman's contract has an opt-out after each year, so there could be another conversation one year from now.
With the former Houston Astro officially out of the picture, the Blue Jays are set to open the season with Ernie Clement at third base.
