The Los Angeles Angels have signed right-handed pitcher Sam Ryan to a minor league contract.
Jared Tims was the first to report the deal.
Ryan was originally drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 12th round of the 2019 MLB Draft out of Virginia Commonwealth University.
Although Ryan briefly appeared at Double-A New Hampshire, he spent most of his time shuttling between the Blue Jays' Class A affiliates in Dunedin and Vancouver.
In his four minor league seasons, Ryan posted a 9-6 record with a 4.89 ERA in 68 appearances, including 10 starts.
After his release from Toronto, Ryan spent the 2024 season with the New England Knockouts of the Frontier League, though his performance didn't improve much. In 21 games, including 16 starts, he went 7-6 with a 5.53 ERA.
Evidently, the Angels' scouting team saw something in him, offering Ryan a minor league deal.
Once the deal was finalized, Ryan was assigned to High-A Tri-City.
While it's unlikely he'll make it to the majors this season, this opportunity could provide Ryan with the confidence boost needed to get his career back on track.
Despite his less-than-ideal results, Ryan has a solid strikeout rate. However, his control remains an issue, as he struggles with walks and hit-by-pitches, both of which are elevated.
If Ryan can resolve his mechanical issues, he could emerge as a potential contributor for the Angels by 2026. If not, this could turn out to be a short-term experiment.
