The Toronto Blue Jays have finalized the signing of pitcher Max Scherzer, in a move that many expected would happen.
To make room on the active roster, pitcher Michael Petersen was designated for assignment. The Blue Jays now have seven days to trade, release, or outright Petersen.
The official announcement comes days after a report that the Blue Jays and Scherzer had agreed to a one-year, $15.5MM deal.
The contract has a full no-trade clause and doesn't come with any deferred money.
Scherzer should immediately slot in as the Blue Jays fourth starter and significantly lengthens the rotation and overall pitching staff.
Petersen, 30, debuted in the majors last year, splitting time between the Marlins and the Dodgers.
Overall in 2024, Petersen was 3-1 with a 5.95 in 16 games. He compiled 14 strikeouts in 19.2 innings.
There are a number of ways the Blue Jays could handle his DFA, but look for something akin to trading him for cash, similar to what they did with both Brett de Geus and Brandon Eisert.
