The Miami Marlins have claimed pitcher Brett de Geus off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates. To make room on the roster, they designated fellow right-hander Seth Martinez for assignment.
de Geus, who briefly pitched for the Marlins last year, is now joining his third team of the offseason.
The Pirates had acquired de Geus for cash from the Blue Jays after Toronto designated him for assignment following the signing of Jeff Hoffman. Pittsburgh then cut ties with him after signing starter Andrew Heaney last week.
de Geus has been on the move frequently, suiting up for three different teams last year. In addition to the Marlins and Blue Jays, he also appeared in three games for the Seattle Mariners.
Before that, he split the 2021 season between the Texas Rangers and Arizona Diamondbacks.
Despite logging 60 career games and possessing the raw stuff to succeed, the results just haven't been there for de Geus, who owns a career 7.48 ERA.
Still, dde Geus has minor league options remaining, making him an affordable, low-risk, and controllable depth piece for Miami if he can find his rhythm.
Even if he doesn't break camp with the big league club, the Marlins could stash him in the minors, where there's still hope he could put things together.
His 16.6% strikeout rate and 10% walk rate are both underwhelming, but his exceptional ground-ball rate - over 50% - has likely kept teams interested and his big-league hopes alive.
If de Geus can harness his potential, there's a path for him to become a useful bullpen piece.
