Dave Winfield has announced his retirement from the Players Union.

The Hall of Fame outfielder and hero of the 1992 World Series with the Blue Jays, had served as Special Assistant to Executive Tony Clark since 2013.
Clark, himself a former big leaguer, who debuted the year Winfield retired, issued a statement thanking Winfield for his years of service.

This decision, made after careful reflection and in consultation with his family, marks the end of an extraordinary chapter in baseball history - one defined by passion, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment both to the game and our union.
From his early days as a standout at the University of Minnesota, to his meteoric rise with the San Diego Padres, Dave's journey on the field was always about more than just baseball. As a young Player, he recognized that the true measure of success lay in the collective strength of the Player fraternity. It was this spirit that inspired him to get involved with the MLBPA, helping to shape the union into the institution it is today.

Winfield, who had the winning hit in Game 6 of the 1992 World Series, spent the majority of his playing career with the San Diego Padres and New York Yankees.
After his retirement as a player, Winfield stayed closely involved and helped grow the game in several ways.
In addition to his work with the MLBPA, Winfield was responsible for MLB holding a special draft of surviving Negro League players, and delivered an induction speech on behalf of Bud Fowler, who was elected posthumously, 109 years after his death.

Additionally, Winfield was part of a contingent that traveled to Cuba with former President Barack Obama and was in attendance for a game between the Tampa Bay Rays and the Cuba National Team.
He also worked as an analyst and appeared in other forms of media including video games, songs and sitcoms.
