The Toronto Blue Jays have potentially received their bad news of Spring Training.
Adam Macko, one of the team's top pitching prospect, has a probable tear of his meniscus and will likely require surgery.
Macko had felt some discomfort in his knee during a recent session and underwent an MRI, which revealed the tear.
If Macko does require surgery, it would likely sideline him for most of the year, as recovery time is often six months, depending on the severity of injury and type of surgery.
It would also represent a significant blow to the Toronto Blue Jays pitching depth. While Macko was schedules to start the year at Triple-A Buffalo, he represented starter number seven or eight behind Jake Bloss and Adam Kloffenstein.
He was also one of two left-handed starters, alongside Eric Lauer, that the Toronto Blue Jays were ready to call upon during the season.
If Macko does up end up missing time, it continues a worrying trend for the Toronto Blue Jays. They already have eight pitchers in various stages of recovery from Tommy John surgery including former ace Alek Manoah, former top prospect Ricky Tiedemann, and first round draft pick Brandon Barriera.
While Toronto Blue Jays pitchers have a done good job of staying healthy at the major league level, arm troubles have been crippling their farm system.
It was initially thought that Macko, 25, would receive his first call-up to the major leagues and make his debut sometime in July.
