The mood was sombre as Ross Atkins gathered around the reporters and microphones.

The Blue Jays had just failed to reach a deal with Vladimir Guerrero Jr. prior to Tuesday morning's deadline and Atkins' body language said it all.
While Guerrero - who was stood next to team translator Hector "Tito" Lebron - kept things relatively reticent and on message, the mood from the Blue Jays was decidedly different.
Every answer that came out of the mouth of Ross Atkins was the sound of defeat. The echoes of disappointment, and possibly anger, masquerading as reluctance and hesitancy.
Each sentence was the sound of a man who was DONE. While Atkins is not known for being forthcoming, and has a relatively bland personality, his often one-sentence answers seemed to indicate a man who had his soul sucked out of him. In many ways he did.
Then there was Mark Shapiro. At least the Blue Jays President and CEO was trying. While he wasn't necessarily cheerful, he was, at the very least, amiable.
Atkins didn't even give a definition of the word close. Shapiro, to his credit, said that a deal either gets done or it doesn't. There is no time for close-ness. And yet, in spite of his relative openness, it did come across as a bit phony.
Shapiro also offered a smidgen of insight into the Blue Jays process and contracts as a whole.
Still, it was not a pretty sight, as even my computer screen felt the tension bristling throughout the Florida Complex.
I think everyone just needs a little bit of sleep.
Tomorrow is a new day.
