The Toronto Blue Jays have added to their coaching department by hiring former minor league farm hand Juan Nunez.
The signing was first announced by the Kansas City Monarchs, the last team that Nunez suited up for,
While the exact nature of Nunez's position is not known, given that he is a pitcher, it figures to be the pitching development and research department.
The Blue Jays previously the coaching staffs for all their minor league affiliates and while Nunez could see some time with them as a roving instructor, he is more likely to work at the Florida Complex and with the Front Office in development, analytics and research.
Nunez, 28, pitched in the minor leagues for the Blue Jays for nearly a decade, reaching as a high as Double-A New Hampshire. Although he had some success with the Fisher Cats in 2023, when his ERA was 2.53, he never really found his footing.
He found himself back at the Florida Complex in the early stages of 2024 before he was ultimately released by the team. He signed on with the Monarchs but had a 10.57 ERA through just seven games.
While his playing career never amounted to much and is now officially over, the Blue Jays clearly see something in him to be a mentor to potential future stars.
The hiring is a good one too for the Blue Jays who are renowned for having a superior major league pitching department, but have struggled to develop their minor leaguers and keep them healthy. Nunez is one step in the right direction.
