That's the day of the first full-squad workout during Spring Training. It also happens to be the deadline for any Vladimir Guerrero Jr. extension talks.
Both Keegan Matheson and Ben Nicholson-Smith, citing an MLB Press release, reported on two key Spring Training dates for the Blue Jays.
The first is February 13th, when all pitchers and catchers report to Dunedin. The second comes five days later, when the rest of the players arrive, including Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
The Blue Jays All-Star first baseman has long said that he won't negotiate a contract past the first day of Spring Training, as he wants to put all his energy into playing baseball and preparing for the upcoming season. And he's right to have that mindset. Protracted negotiations can often take their on both the player, and the organization. Once Spring Training starts, the focus rightly turns to getting in shape and being the best one can be.
This gives Mark Shapiro, Ross Atkins, and the Blue Jays a little over a month to come to an agreement with their 25 year old superstar. In the world of baseball, four weeks is both a long time, and can also feel like no time at all.
Even if the Blue Jays and Guerrero fail to reach an agreement prior to February 18th, that doesn't mean all is lost. As BlueJays Central wrote earlier, Guerrero could decide to take the Aaron Judge route, where he tests free agency to gauge the numbers and then re-signs with the Jays.
That being said, everyone would love for a deal to get done sooner, rather than later.
The clock is ticking Ross.
