After being picked up off waivers by the Blue Jays from the Cardinals on August 1st, Raposo was DFA'd by the team in December, a victim of the team needing roster space following the Yimi Garcia signing. He was then claimed by the Seattle Mariners.
Well the Mariners just acquired Miles Mastrobuoni from the Cubs. Because it was a major league transaction, the Mariners needed to make room on the 40-man roster. So for the 2nd time in just over a month, Nick Raposo found himself designated for assignment.
It's been a tough go for the catching prospect who, at 26, has yet to make his major league debut.
Initially signed by the Cardinals as an undrafted free agent in 2020, Raposo made his professional debut in 2021. He was actually called up by the Redbirds in June of this year, following an injury to Ivan Herrera. However, he did not appear in a game and was sent back down two days later. This makes him a very recent example of a phantom ballplayer.
While the Blue Jays signed Ali Sanchez shortly after cutting Raposo, and also have heralded catching prospect Phil Clarke in the minors, Raposo could conceivably end up back with the team, and this time he wouldn't be taking up a 40-man roster spot.
Having catching depth is always a luxury. And while Sanchez has big league experience, having a guy like Raposo who is close to being ready would not be a bad thing.
