While much of the offseason focus has been on the Jays' pursuit of outfielder/DH Anthony Santander, a story originally published by Sporting News has the spotlight on another, different 2024 All-star outfielder: Jurickson Profar.
In a way, Profar could almost be seen as a better fit for the Blue Jays. While he won't slug 40+ home runs like Santander did last season, Profar has hit 20 or more three times, including a career high 24 last year.
And while baseball reference projects him to regress slightly, hitting 16 homers with 62 RBIS, Profar offers values in other ways. First, much like Santander, he's durable, having played at least 125 games every year since 2018 (discounting 2020).
Second, he's got some speed. While he will never steal 40 bases, he did swipe ten in 2024, reaching double digits in stolen bases for the third time in his career.
Finally, his is a much better defensive outfielder than Santander and had a higher overall WAR. (3.6 to Santander's 2.7) last season.
He is also only one year older, and could conceivably roam the outfield for a year or two before passing the torch to a guy like Alan Roden.
Now, it is possible that the Blue Jays could sign both Profar and Santander, with the latter becoming a full-time DH, but that would push Will Wagner to the bench, which is not something anybody would be excited about.
Wagner has proven he can hit at the big league level, and the Blue Jays want the youngster's bat in the lineup as much as possible.
For his career Profar has slashed .245/.331/.395, with a .726 OPS, 98 OPS+, 11 HRs and 444 RBIs.
