While it has been noted that Vladdy reportedly turned down a $340M extension offer from the Blue Jays, it was a price presented before Juan Soto signed his record-breaking contract with the New York Mets.
Guerrero declined it and wanted to see how the market played out. With the Soto signing, Guerrero could see his value soar upwards of $500 million. The question is whether or not the Blue Jays will be willing to pay.
According to analysts and Blue Jays insider Shi Davidi, both sides need to come their current stubborn high ground.
How that will happen remains to be seen, but Davidi was quoted as saying that the Blue Jays will need to move out of their comfort zone in terms of price and that Vladdy will probably have to sacrifice some upside. It's a matter of money vs. job security.
The money is there, but Juan Soto moved the goal posts.
If the Blue Jays and Guerrero are able to come to an agreement, that would also bode well for Bo Bichette's future with the Jays. The short stop has said that he wants to keep playing in Toronto, but that he wants to do it with Vladdy.
The two are longtime friends, having grown up together in the minor leagues.
And while some non-Blue Jays analysts have floated the idea of trading the superstar first baseman, there is no reason to think that the Blue Jays are considering that option at this point in time.
If the Jays can lock him up, he will be the anchor and core of the future, but it is a two-way street.
