The Toronto Blue Jays have traded pitcher Brett de Geus to the Pittsburgh Pirates for cash considerations. The deal was announced by the Blue Jays themselves on their social media.

de Geus had been designated for assignment following the signing of free agent closer Jeff Hoffman.

de Geus appeared in just two games for the Blue Jays in 2024, reaching a 15.43 ERA in a mere 2.1 innings. The Jays were his third different team he suited for that season, following stints with the Seattle Mariners and Miami Marlins.

de Geus was designated for assignment a few days ago and thus the Blue Jays had seven days to trade, release, or outright him. A trade seemed most likely as de Geus had already been outrighted once in his career.

Deals for cash, such as this one, are relatively common when a player has been DFA'd. It's a way for the team who designated the player, in this case the Blue Jays, to receive something in return and avoid having to release him outright. For the team paying cash, the amount is usually minimal and doesn't cause any financial strain.

Pittsburgh will be de Geus' eighth major league organization. In addition to the three teams he suited up for in 2024, he has also had brief stints with both the Arizona Diamondbacks, and the Texas Rangers, with whom he made his major league debut with back in 2021. As well, he has had minor league stints with both the Dodgers and Royals and spent some time with the York Revolution of the Atlantic League.

Brett de Geusis 27 years old.
