Originally a tenth round draft pick by Cleveland in 2016, Thomas Pannone in a 2017 trade for relief pitcher Joe Smith. In the minors for the Jays, he showed a great combination of power and speed, stealing 44 bases in Single-A, while hitting 16 dingers with Double-A New Hampshire.
Taylor was traded, along with pitcher https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/castima03.shtml, to the Kansas City Royals for 2nd baseman/outfielder Whit Whit Merrifield in 2022. After starting the 2023 season in Triple-A, he made his major league debut in June. He ended up playing in 31 games for the Royals that season, hitting .200 with no home runs and two RBIs, while stealing eight bases.
Prior to 2024, Taylor was shipped to Mariners for cash. While he ended up only playing three games for the M's in April, he did go 2-5 with two runs scored. He spent the rest of the year in Triple-A Tacoma, where he ended up stealing 50 bases.
Taylor was DFA'd by the Mariners today following their trade with the Orioles for catcher Blake Hunt, who himself was designated by the O's on Monday. Hunt essentially replaces Nick Raposo, the former Blue Jays catching prospect who was DFA'd by the Mariners on Tuesday. Raposo was cut the Jays in December.
The Mariners now have seven days to trade, release, or outright Taylor.
