Buster Olney believes the Toronto Blue Jays have made a major misstep when it comes to Vladimir Guerrero Jr.-and not just because they failed to sign him to a long-term extension before last Tuesday's deadline.
Olney also argues that it's now too late to trade him. As a pending free agent, Guerrero won't fetch the kind of return the Blue Jays could have commanded if he had already been extended.
But Olney's biggest criticism? That the situation even reached this point.
When the Blue Jays were negotiating with Juan Soto and agent Scott Boras, they saw firsthand how high the numbers were climbing. So why didn't they have similar discussions with Guerrero at that time?
And if they had already determined they couldn't meet his price, why not explore trade options sooner? According to Olney, the Blue Jays simply waited too long.
While Guerrero 's asking price may be steep for a first baseman, Olney believes that given his value to the franchise and fan base, paying him will be worth it in the end.
As for Guerrero liking photoshopped images of himself in Yankees and Red Sox uniforms? Olney says it's now a standard move for elite free agents-a subtle way to signal discontent and perhaps put pressure on their current team.
And honestly? I agree with Olney. The Blue Jays aren't likely to trade Guerrero anytime soon because they know they won't get top value in return.
At the same time, simply letting Vladdy walk for a minimal return would be a massive misstep.
It's a stalemate, and the only question is: Will the Blue Jays blink first?
