The Toronto Blue Jays and manager John Schneider have issued an update on Joey Loperfido following the outfielder's early exit in today's game versus the St. Louis Cardinals.
Victor Scott II led off the game for the Redbirds and promptly laced a long fly ball to deep centre field. Loperfido, starting in centre for the Blue Jays, gave chased and crashed awkwardly into the wall. Scott ended up on second base with a double.
Schneider and head trainer Jose Ministral immediately came onto the field. Although Loperfido successfully passed concussion protocols, he was removed from the game as a precaution.
Later in the game, it was mentioned that Loperfido was removed due to neck discomfort. Given how awkwardly he hit the wall, both the Blue Jays andLoperfidoshould be thankful that the injury isn't worse.
While the Blue Jays didn't say if Loperfido will need to miss any time, the dearth of outfielders currently in camp means that he easily replaceable.
At the same time, his absence will likely be minimal. As Loperfido is fighting for a spot on the opening day spot, the more time he misses the more difficult it becomes to win a role among the crowded field of candidates. Fortunately opening day is still 30 days away.
Along with Berroa, Loperfido is competing with Nathan Lukes, Davis Schneider, Jonatan Clase, and potentially Addison Barger and Alan Roden for a back-up outfielder spot, though Loperfido is considered one of the front runner.
With Daulton Varsho now potentially ready for opening day, the competition just became tighter.
Fortunately for all involved, the injury doesn't appear to serious.
