Justin Turner is feeling left out. The 40 year old just wants to play baseball and believes he still can.
Turner, who split time between the Blue Jays and Mariners last season, is a free agent with the ability to play multiple positions. One of those positions his first base.
With both Christian Walker, Paul Goldschmidt, Josh Naylor, and Carlos Santana all coming off the board, MLB insider Jeff Passan took to X to break down the top free agent first baseman left on the market.
Now, Passan probably ddin't mean to cause offence, especially when you look at Turner's stats. Yes he can play first base, but he only 123 career games at the position, but over half of those have come in the last two seasons.
He also appeared at 143 games at second, 277 at DH, and over 900 at third. He even has 46 appearances at SS and one in LF.
Plus, his 2024 season wasn't objectively terrible. He had 11 home runs, 55 RBIs, a .354. OBP with a 116 OPS+. The numbers were fairly evenly split between the two teams, but overall, marginally better with Seattle. Turner did better when he was playing.
So while Turner may think himself a first baseman, and fair enough given his last couple of years, he is probably not the everyday player that Passan was referring to.
