Jeff Torborg, the former MLB catcher who later went onto manager several teams including the Montreal Expos, has passed away at 83.

Torborg was the manager of Montreal during the 2001 season, replacing the popular Felipe Alou. Initially signed to a three-year contract, he left for Florida the following season when Expos owner Jeffrey Loria purchased the Marlins and took his entire management and front office team with him. The move, which was part of a deal with late Red Sox owner John Henry, was widely unpopular in Montreal, caused former Bud Selig to be sued for racketeering and led to the death of the Expos.

Torborg ended up managing the Marlins until 2003, when he was fired midway through the season and replaced by Jack McKeon, who led the Marlins to their second World Series title that October.

Torborg also had a ten year career as a major league catcher, split between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the California Angels. He won a World Series with the former in 1960.

In addition to the Expos and Marlins, Torborg also had stints leading the Indians, White Sox, and Mets, and won Manager of the year in 1990 while in Chicago. He also served a coach with the New York Yankees from 1979-1988.

In between managerial jobs and after being let go by the Marlins, Torborg worked in broadcasting, mainly for CBS radio and Fox. In the 1990s, while working for CBS, he called three World Series alongside the late, great Vin Scully.

Torborg finished with a lifetime managerial record of 634-718.
