Two days after the club landed prized Japanese pitcher Roki Sasaki, the Dodgers landed arguably the top reliever left on the market in Tanner Scott, agreeing to a four year, $72MM deal. MLB insider Mark Feinsand was first to report the deal.
According to MLB and SportNet's Ben Nicholson-Smith, the Blue Jays were also in on Scott, because of course they were.
With the Blue Jays seemingly in on every free agent under the sun this offseason, it should come as no surprise that they were also connected to Scott. It also shouldn't come as a surprise that they failed to sign him.
While losing a potential player to the Dodgers no doubt stings after the Sasaki deal, the depths of Toronto's interest in the closer is unknown, especially after their current deal with Jeff Hoffman.
Even so, the Blue Jays have been surprisingly aggressive when it comes to relievers this offseason, adding Hoffman, Nick Sandlin, and reuniting with Yimi Garcia.
For his career, the 30 year old Scott is 31-24 with a 3.56 ERA and 55 saves. He was an All-Star in 2024 after accumulating 22 saves to go along with 9-6 record and a minuscule 1.75 ERA.
While not signing Scott won't effect things in the long term, especially since no one knew the Blue Jays were interested, fans will be understandably annoyed and exasperated of what is becoming an almost daily scenario.
Rumours continue to abound.
