MLB Trade Rumours is reporting that the Blue Jays are showing interest in 3X Cy Young Award winner and future Hall of Famer Max Scherzer. This is certainly one that came out of nowhere.
It's no secret that the Blue Jays are in search of more pitching help, but Scherzer will be 41 in July and made only nine starts last year. As Ben Nicholson-Smith points out, if the Blue Jays were to land somebody like Anthony Santander or Pete Alonso it might make the team an attractive destination. As it stands though, Toronto feels like a long shot at best.
Scherzer's credentials are well known. 216 Wins. Eight All-Star game appearances. 3407 career strikeouts. He is one of the big four pitchers of this era along with Justin Verlander, Clayton Kershaw, and Zack Greinke. (Though Greinke hasn't pitched since 2023 and Kershaw remains unsigned), all of whom are likely first-ballot hall of famers when their time comes.
In spite of that, Scherzer seems somewhat of an odd fit for the Blue Jays. While a one-year deal certainly isn't out of the question, with the contracts of Chris Bassitt and Kevin Gausman both up within the next two years, and with Jose Berrios' opt-out after 2026, it feels like the Blue Jays would like something more long term.
That being said, if Scherzer can stay healthy, he would of course be an asset to the Blue Jays rotation. The wisdom of Mad Max could certainly be instilled upon guys like Bowden Francis and Jake Bloss
At the end of the day though, this feels like a non-story.
