Today is February 9th, which means the Blue Jays and Guerrero have ten days-counting today-to work out a deal before his February 18th deadline, the first day of Spring Training.
This will undoubtedly be the story of the spring.
Several scenarios could unfold.
The scenario everyone hopes for is that Blue Jays fans wake up one day to find Guerrero locked up for the next decade or more-somewhere between 10 to 15 years, worth anywhere from $450 million to $700 million.
The second possibility is that Guerrero doesn't sign before the season starts, enters free agency, and ultimately re-signs with the Blue Jays after experiencing the market.
This scenario carries the most uncertainty, as no one is quite sure which version of Vlad will show up. Will it be the 2021 or second-half 2024 version? Or will it be the 2022-2023 version?
How well Guerrero performs in 2025 will play a significant role in determining his next contract.
The third scenario, which nobody wants to see, is that Guerrero is traded. This would only happen if the Blue Jays feel there's little chance he re-signs next offseason.
It's also possible that a contract extension could be announced sometime between February 18th and Opening Day.
Often, if parties have reached an agreement in principle, talks will continue beyond the deadline to finalize the details. This could very well happen here.
Whatever unfolds, Blue Jays Nation will be waiting with bated breath.
