Michael Stefanic thought his baseball career was over before it even started. Eligible for the 2018 draft, he wasn't among the 1,200 players selected - nor was he signed as an undrafted free agent.

He did have a job lined up, though - a legal assistant position at a law firm in Santa Barbara.
But between interviews, Stefanic put together a highlight reel, blending footage from his four-year career at Westmont College with clips of himself fielding ground balls at his old high school in Idaho.
He sent it to any team that would watch. Eventually, the Los Angeles Angels came calling, and Stefanic made his major league debut with the club in 2022.
Now in camp with the Blue Jays as a non-roster invitee after being cut by the Angels, Stefanic has an outside shot at earning a spot with the team.
While it's still early in camp, he's made a solid first impression, notching an RBI single against the St. Louis Cardinals and adding a sacrifice fly versus the Phillies.
Stefanic knows nothing is guaranteed. He'll almost certainly open the season with Triple-A Buffalo, where he'll need to impress to climb a Blue Jays depth chart crowded with infield options.
His path isn't easy, but one thing working in Stefanic's favor is his elite contact ability. His 3.7% swinging strike rate ranks seventh among more than 5,000 minor leaguers since 2019.
He's on the outside looking in, but if he performs, he could force his way into the conversation - not unlike Ernie Clement last year. Clement made the most of his opportunity, and now he's a Gold Glove finalist.
At the very least, Stefanic is a name worth watching this spring and into the regular season. He just might surprise.
