Sean Reid-Foley was not otherwise outrighted and still remains a member of the Mets 40-man roster. While rare, clubs are allowed to place a player on waivers without immediately removing them from the 40 man, as the Rockies did earlier this week with Justin Lawrence. Since waivers is non-revocable however, the Mets would lose him if another team put in a claim.
Sean Reid-Foley was initially was acquired by the Mets along with Yenssy Diaz from the Toronto Blue Jays in a 2021 deal for Steven Matz. The Blue Jays had drafted him 49th overall, in the 2nd round of the 2014 MLB draft.
Although, he has appeared in each of the last seven seasons, his health struggles and lack of consistency have limited him to just 71 games in total, with a career record of 8-12.
Injuries are a big part of why Sean Reid-Foley has never reached his full potential. During his first season with New York, he suffered from elbow inflammation, and then in 2022, underwent Tommy John surgery.
It's possible that Sean Reid-Foley could end up staying with the Mets, who have been down this road before with the right-hander.
After his injury-shortened campaigns, he was non-tendered by the organization, only to re-sign a minor league contract prior to the 2023 season. He ended getting recalled to the big leagues later that year and held on to his roster spot in 2024.
He has shown flashes of brilliance, but control has always been an issue for Sean Reid-Foley, whose career walk rate is an uninspiring 14.2%
Despite his struggles, Sean Reid-Foley could still be a valuable depth piece for many clubs and - although he is out of options - thanks to arbitration, could still be under team control until 2027.
