The Toronto Blue Jays aren't the only team making depth moves this offseason.

Every team does it.

The most recent news is that the Kansas City Royals have signed RHP Junior Fernandez to a minor league contract Fernandez last appeared in a major league game in 2022.

The deal is for 825K and includes an invite to spring training.

Fernandez was signed by the St. Louis Cardinals as an international free agent in 2014 and after seven years in their system, finally made it to the big leagues in 2021.

While the numbers in his first season were ugly, he did pitch himself to a 2.93 ERA in 13 games in 2022. He was designated for assignment that September and ended up pitching three games for the Pirates.

He started 2023 in the Blue Jays system and had limited success. While his 5.69 ERA was ugly, he did strike out 46 batters in 49 innings across 42 games while also picking up a save. He was DFA'd by the club in August.

A week after being cut loose by the Jays, he signed with the Washington Nationals, and in nine appearances for Triple-A Rochester, recorded a 2.79 ERA.

A free agent after 2023, he signed with the Chiba Lotte Marines in NPB, but was injured and then ultimately after throwing only two scoreless innings.

For his major league career, Fernandez is 1-1 with a 5.17 ERA, 80 ERA+ with 47 strikeouts across 54 innings of work in 50 career games.
