MLB insider Francys Romero has reported that the Blue Jays have signed their top two IFAs out of Venezuela, shortstops Kennew Blanco and Elenaiker Coronado. Coronado receives a bonus of $850 000, while Blanco gets $600 000.
They are the fifth and sixth international signings by the Blue Jays following Christopher Polanco, Alexander Valiente, Juan Sanchez, and Marcel Marcelino. Like Blanco and Coronado, Polanco and Sanchez are also shortstops.
At 17, Blanco is one the youngest players in the international class, and was the 10th ranked overall international prospect in 2024. A spray hitter to all parts of the field, his smooth swing and decent bat speed allows him to hit the ball into the gaps.
While he boasts average arm strength for a middle infielder, his combination of instincts and athleticism allow him to move well and he has a great all-around defensive profile.
The Blue Jays have done really well in past years in developing shortstops and middle infielders; their current logjam at the major league level is evidence of that. And while not all IFAs stick or make it to the bigs, the Blue Jays have some solid picks.
The Blue Jays have a total of $8,261,600 to spend on IFAs. They have agreements in place with nine prospects, which leaves three players left to go.
