After signing IFA shortstop Christopher Polanco and Cuban pitcher Alexander Valiente, the Blue Jays announced two further deals, capping off a whirlwind Monday.
MLB Reporter Francys Romero, who is in one of the main insiders when it comes to the International Free Agent period, reported that the Jays closed their agreements with shortstop Juan Sanchez and pitcher Marcel Marcelino. Both players hail from the Dominican Republic.
Sanchez received a bonus of $1 000 000, while Marcelino took home $10 000.
With a set amount of money when it comes to international free agents, most teams have agreements already in place for pre-arranged amounts.
No word yet on the other players the Blue Jays have been connected to.
This brings the Blue Jays IFA total to four. It has been reported that they have agreements with nine players. With the extra bonus pool that they acquired in a trade with the Cleveland Guardians, and after a failed bid for Japanese phenom Roki Sasaki, it is possible that the Jays could honour all nine agreements.
Originally, the Blue Jays had over $6MM to spend of international free agents.
After acquiring Myles Straw and $2MM from the Guardians, that amount sits at slightly over $8 million.
This allows them some leeway in who they want to sign and for how much.
