The past couple of seasons have not gone Alek Manoah's way.

In 2023, the former savior of the rotation and one-time All-Star found himself sent all the way to the Florida Complex League as he worked through a variety of issues, both physical and mental. Then, this past season, he underwent Tommy John surgery.

For the first time in years however, he feels good.

I'm starting the fourth week of my throwing progression. I feel like I'm eight years old again ... It feels great just to be able to play catch, to be able to feel healthy and just experience that excitement.

He is feeling like himself again, and has been returning to his mechanics of old, something that had been lacking in 2023.

My arm is just so much lighter. It's moving great. My arm action and the patterning of my arm has gone right back into the same slot that I was used to throwing at in college, and early on when I got brought up, you know, in '21 and '22. It just feels really good to be able to have that arm action and release point, and just have those extra little key features that allow everything to be in sync.

Manoah, who is currently working his back way from Tommy John surgery, has talked to other pitchers who went through it, most notably former teammate Hyun-jin Ryu.

He explained that he hopes to start throwing bullpen sessions in March, and then to live batters by June, With rehab starts scheduled for July, that would put Manoah on track to return for the last two months of the season.

Manoah is also learning more about the business of baseball, saying that Jordan Romano's departure didn't feel right for anybody, but that he is also excited by the return of Yimi Garcia and particularly by the acquisition of Andres Gimenez, calling the short stop "unbelievable" .

Manoah had his surgery back in June.
